As the first part of my research into thriller as a genre of film I decide that I would create a brainstorm about thriller films. This brainstorm includes key words associated with thriller films, thriller film sub genres, examples of thriller films and also key forms and conventions of thriller films.
Thrillers are a genre of films that use suspense, anticipation and tension to help build their plotline to a climax where usually in most thriller films will lead to a menacing or life threatening situation for the victim. Most thriller films include plot twists for to keep the audience guessing about the final outcome of the storyline until the end of the film. Also in a lot of thriller films there are red herrings in the story line to also help confuse the viewer and add to the surprise element of the final outcome of the film. Usually a thriller will follow a basic charter structure of a victim and a villain as the main focus point of the story.
Conventions such as camera, editing, sound and Mise en scene are an essential part of constructing a convincing thriller films.
Typical types of camera shots that are usually used in thriller films are slow panning shots that help to add and build tension in a scene. Also another shot type that are typically used in thriller films are close ups and extreme close ups these are usually used to help try and build suspense with in a scene. Also in thriller films camera angles are used to help portray a charters importance to the audience. Low angled shots can be used to portray a victim in a position of weakness, and high angled shots can be used to portray a villain in a position of power.
Typical editing techniques that are usually included in a thriller films are fast cutting jumpy sequences which helps portray to a sense of unease to the viewer watching the film. But in total contrast sometimes in thriller films will include a sequence with little edited cuts in it to help build a sense of tension in a scene.
Typical sound and music that is used in a thriller films are; music that is typically used in thriller films is usually slow pace music that helps add the tension and suspense building in a scene. Also sounds may be included blended into the music to give a more realistic tone to the scene. The key thing about music in thriller films is that it is always used to enchase a scene and create tension rather than become a dominating factor in the scene.
Typical costumes that are used in thriller genre films vary depending on weather a character is a villain in the film or a victim in the film. The types of costumes that a villain in a thriller film might wear is formal, smart type clothes such as suits and jackets usually these would be in dark colours such as black and grey. Smart clothes in dark colours are usually chosen for villains in thriller films because they give of an air of authority and superiority above other charters and put them in a position of power. In contrast to costumes selected for villains costumes that might be selected for a victim in a thriller film might be more casual and in less shocking colours. These are usually selected for victims because they portray them in a more normal light to the viewers.
Typical locations that might be used in thriller films depending on the plot line may be locations such as urban settings, country side, alley ways and bedrooms. Usually these locations will feature dark gloomy colours as well as lots of blacks and whites. These types of locations and featured coloured pallet in the location are selected for thriller films because they help add to the dark quality of a thriller film.
Typical props that may be included in thriller genre films are usually weapons such as guns and knives. Props such as these are usually selected to be included in thriller films because they become a key part of the film especially if the thriller is a sub genre of thriller such as crime, action or psychological.
Typical lighting that is common in thriller genre films is usually low lit locations to add to the creepy and eerie quality to the scene and also in some cases lighting will be used in thrillers to create shadows to make the locations look gloomier. Also sometimes lighting may be used to mask parts of locations or characters to give a mystery edge to them.
