Audience Expectation Survey Of Genre

After conducting detail research into the thriller sub genre and the conventions used in the genre I wanted to conducted an audience feedback survey to understand which qualities and conventions an audience expects to see included in a thriller film. This questionnaire includes nine key questions covering audience’s expectations of mise en scene and other key convention groups.

I showed this PowerPoint to the people that I surveyed because it includes key images of the multiply choice questions such as for the question based around costumes to make it easier to understand what the multiply choice answers are.

These are the results from the survey. I have tried to use a relevant form of a graph to help make the analysis of my audience expectations questionnaire easier to understand.

As question one in my audience expectation survey of genre I asked 10 people if they usually pick thriller films as a genre of film to watch, I asked them to select either yes or no to answer the question .I found that 60% of the people I asked said that they would chose to watch a thriller film. I found that the other 40% of the people I asked said that they would not chose to watch thriller films. These results have given me a very ruff about the amount of people in a broader demographic that thriller films might appeal to. The results from this question will help me when creating my thriller film opening sequence because it gives me an idea about the demographic and size of audience that thriller films have.

As question two in my audience expectation survey of genre I asked 10 people what the last thriller film that they watched was, this was the only non multiply choice question included in the questionnaire. I found that a wide range of thriller films were given as answers films from all different sub-genres of thrillers but I have noticed that a lot of the thriller films that were given as answers are more current thriller films mainly no more than two years old. These results have shown me that the audience likes a wide range of different types of thriller films ranging from action thrillers to psychological thrillers.

As question three in my audience expectation survey of genre I asked 10 people which out of the ten main thriller sub genres of film appealed to them the most, I asked them to select one answer out of the ten options given in this question. I found that 30% of the people I asked said that psychological thriller sub-genres appeal to them the most out of all thriller sub genre. I found that another 20% of the people I asked said that conspiracy thriller are the thriller sub-genre that appeals to them the most. Another 20% of the people I asked said that supernatural thriller films were the thriller sub-genre that appealed to them the most. Another 20% of the people I asked said that crime thrillers were the sub-genre of thriller films that appeal to them the most. I found that only 10% of the people I asked said that mystery thriller films appeal to them the most from the thriller sub-genres. These results have shown me some of the thriller sub-genres that are the most popular out of the wide range of thriller sub genres. The results from this question will help me when creating my thriller film opening sequence because it shows me roughly which thriller sub-genres are most popular which means and now I can try to include elements of these in my opening sequence to help it appeal to a wider range of people.

As question four in my audience expectation survey of genre I asked 10 people which out of four key thriller narratives they would expect to see in a typical thriller film, I asked them to select one answer in this question. I found that 40% of the people I asked said that tension is the narrative that they would most expect to see in a thriller film. I also found that another 30% of the people that I asked said that the narrative they would most expect to see used in a thriller film is fear. Another 20% of the people I asked said that they most expected to see obsession used as a key narrative in thriller films. The other 10% of people I asked said that they expected to see murder used as a key narrative in thriller films. These results have shown me that different audience member of a thriller film will expect to see different key narratives used through out the film. The results from this question will help me when creating my thriller film opening sequence because it has shown me that to meet audience expectations surrounding narrative I will have to use elements from a wide range of narratives to meet the expectations of a wide audience demographic.

As question five in my audience expectation survey of genre I asked 10 people which out of six different items of clothing they would most expect to see a villain in a thriller film to be wearing, I asked them to select two answers in the question out of the options given. I found that 70% of the people I asked selected a black coat as one of the two items of clothing they would expect to see a villain wearing in a thriller film. I found that another 40% of people I asked selected a black dress as one of the two items of clothing that they would expect to see a villain wearing in a thriller film. Another 40% of the people I asked selected high heels as one of the two items that they expect to see a villain wearing in a thriller film. I also found that 30% of the people I asked selected trainers as one of the two items of clothing that they would expect to see a villain wearing in a thriller film. And I found that the other 20% of the people I asked selected jeans as one of the two items that they would expect to see a villain wearing in a thriller film. These results have shown me that the main items that an audience would expect to see a villain wearing in a thriller film are all items that are formal and use a dark colour pallet. The results from this question will help me when creating my thriller film opening sequence because now I know the audience expectations for villain’s costumes in thriller films I can make sure that I meet these by including items such as a dark coloured coat.

As question six in my audience expectation survey of genre I asked 10 people which out of three key props they would most expect to see used in a typical thriller film, I asked them to select one of the given options. I found that 50% of the people I asked said that the key prop that they would expect to see used in a thriller film are a knife. I also found that another 30% of the people I asked said that they would expect to see a gun used as a key prop in a thriller film. And the other 20% of people I asked said that they would most expect to see a clock used as a key prop in a thriller film. These results have shown me that the main key props that an audience expect to see in a thriller films is the use of weapons such as guns and knives. The results from this question will help me when creating my thriller film opening sequence because it has shown me the types of props that an audience expect to see used in a thriller film and I can now try to include props such as weapons in the opening sequence to try and help meet the expectation of the audience surrounding props.

As question seven in my audience expectation survey of genre I asked 10 people which out of four typical thriller locations they would most expect to see used in a thriller genre film, I asked them to select one of the given answers. I found that 40% of the people I asked said that the location that they would most expect to see used in a thriller film is an alley way. I also found that another 30% of the people that I asked said that the location that they would most expect to see used in a thriller film is an urban city type location. Another 20% of the people I asked said that the type of location that they would most expect to see used in a thriller film are a suburban type location. The other 10% of the people I asked said that the location that they would most expect to see used in a thriller film is a bedroom used as a location. These results have shown me that the types of locations that an audience expect to be used in a thriller film is wide a varied but the most people I asked said that they would expect to see an alley way used as a key location in a film. The results from this question will help me when creating my thriller film opening sequence because I now know what types of location I need to include meeting audience expectations such as locations like alley ways and urban looking locations.

As question eight in my audience expectation survey of genre I asked 10 people which out of five key camera shots that are typically used in thriller films they most expect to see used in a thriller film, I asked them to select one of the given answers. I found that 30% of the people I asked said that they would most expect to see the use of extreme close ups used as key shot types in thriller films. I found that another 30% of people that I asked said that the key camera shot that they expect to see used in a thriller film is slow panning shots. Another 20% of people that I asked said that the camera shot they would expect to see used in a thriller films is close ups. I also found that 20% of the people I asked said that they would most expect to see low angled used in thriller genre films. These results have shown me that key camera shots that an audience would expect to see used in a thriller film is especially extreme close ups and also slow panning shots. The results from this question will help me when creating my thriller film opening sequence because I now know when creating my opening sequence that I will need to meet the audience expectations of a thriller film include key camera shots such as close ups and slow panning shots.

As question nine in my audience expectation survey of genre I asked 10 people which out of two key editing techniques typically used in thriller films they would most expect to see used, I asked then to select one of the given answers. I found that 60% of the people I asked said that in a thriller film they would expect to see fast cutting and jumping editing techniques included as a key form of editing used in thriller films. I also found that the other 40% of people I asked said that they would expect to see slow pace editing included as a key form of editing in a thriller film. These results have shown me that to meet the audiences expectations of editing techniques used in thriller films are fast pace editing techniques. The results from this question will help me when creating my thriller film opening sequence because I now know that to meet the expectations of the audience surrounding editing I will need to include fast pace editing techniques in my opening sequence.
