Age Ratings Research / Target Audience

In this power point I have researched all of the age rating certificates used to rate british films which are “U”, “PG”, “12 and 12A”, “15” and “18”. I have research which age group each category is suitable for and what features a film must include to be given the certain age ratings these features include-
1. Discrimination
2. Drugs
3. Horror
4. Imitable behaviour
5. Language
6. Nudity
7. Sex
8. Theme
9. Violence
I have collected all my age ratings research from the official “british board of film classification” website.

These are screen shots of slides included in my research powerpoint-

Why do we need to know our target audience?
By thinking about the target audience of the film and the age rating it will help when thinking about the design of the DVD cover because firstly we will know what age rating to include on the DVD cover when creating one for our film. Secondly we will also then know what elements such as which photographs and stills of the film to include on the DVD cover it to attract our target market to the film. Also it would help use to know our target market if we were to create a marketing campaign for the film because we would know who to aim promotion at and what elements to include in the marketing campaign.

What is the age rating of our film and why?
To give the film an age rating I researched different age certificates to find out which one would be most suitable for the film If the rest of the film was to be made and released on DVD. I think after my research that the film would be most likely to be given an age certificate 15 because when looking back at my research a lot of the features that a film needed to have to be categorised as a 15 our opening sequences and elements of our plot include. These are things such as the use of a slightly disturbing plot line based around obsession and mental disturbing those younger viewers may find disturbing. Also in our opening sequence we have featured knives which could indicate that violence could be a key part of the film which is another key reason why I have decide to rate the film as a 15 after my research.

Who is the overall key target audience for the film?
If we were to make the rest of the film then we would be aiming for a target audience that we would be aiming at would be the younger generation of people who enjoy films with an alternative style of plot line as our film challenger’s stereotypes with in thriller film by placing a woman in a position of power because we played on the stereotypical femme fatial character in the film as a key character trait. Because we have decided to use elements of a few different thriller sub genres mainly psychological and mystery thrillers our film may appeal to people who enjoy films with elements of psychological torture more than people who like physical torture although it is still insinuated that their could be some elements of psychical violence due to the use of knives as key props in the opening sequence.

In conclusion after looking back at my research and elements that our opening sequences includes and elements of the plot of the rest of the film I think that our main target audience will be young people over the age of 15 properly mainly 15- 35 year olds who enjoy psychological thriller films with alternative style plot lines.
