Camera Shots

When we were creating our opening sequence we tried to make sure that we used a lot of different and interesting camera shots to make sure that the opening sequence would be interesting to watch key camera shots that we used were close ups, extreme close ups, and also we used a lot of slow panning sequence shots these slides explain key shots of these types and why we used them in our opening sequence.

Editing

The opening titles come out very effectively from the editing being able to make the shots smaller made the production titles a lot faster so they would work more effectively. This was also assisted by being able to speed up the process also to create a good speed for the letters to get on screen. The start of the film was done in the mono chrome, grey scale sort of effect after the Film Noir style this makes the atmosphere of the extract more intense and follows thriller conventions with a dark desaturated setting. I edit the piece of footage so that you would know what was going on, the start looks confusing due to there being no dialect in the first section this I believes put more suspense and anticipation for the audience, particularly with the music that has been used. Also the, I intended the first half to be a build put till you see the woman in the bed room. By adding in everyday objects such as the makeup and then the knives, shocks the audience and then this with the music makes it obvious what’s going on to the audience as the plot unravels. This is an epic moment I spent a lot of time editing it to get the most effective moment just so. The first time the audience see the woman is only in part they can see a part of her face in the small mirror and her back. This was cleverly achieved with a combination of skilled camera work and effective editing to make sure you could see the woman properly only what she was doing putting on the gloves. This shows the audience there’s something going on. The reflection in the mirror creates a sinister look as it’s the begging and no one knows the real plot we assume she is our villain.

The clock moment was interesting to get right as we had to set up the camera and let it record for over half an hour so we could effectively have the clocks motion by doing this we had enough footage to reverse and speed up for times which not only created a brilliant effect made a lot of sense to show time going back, to show the audience what happened before to this woman in the build up to this moment. The second half has a strong saturated colour effect this was to create a contrast in the Locations but also shows her two personas, it’s there to represent her kinder side because although she has a femme fatale nature she used to be a lot kinder but what ever happened to her has changed this. The location is completely different this is why I included a lot of establishing moments to show the area and were character is.

The editing of the movement was sometimes a little tricky due to the fact that i struggled to make some things match, our other actor was not the greatest a taking directions and so this was making it difficult to get him to finish a section, but after some skill full editing I believe you can’t really tell. Some moments had to have the speed changes to make them flow better also. I created a scene that flows from footage that didn’t link, which I thought was well achieved. Also I liked the shot to the end where once again you don’t see the whole of the woman’s face I think this creates mystery like all femme fatale characters should have. This was a hard to edit because we had quite a bit of footage of this shot because we waited for a could gust of wind and the right positioning to get the perfect shot and when watching it back to footage sort of blends together so it becomes a case of just filtering down and filtering down. I think a lot of the editing comes down to the transitions I used some times the most simple transitions like a fade to black of a dissolve not only look more effective but more professional. This is why I stuck to using to better transitions.

Location

Music

Our group have played around with the music for our move opening sequence, we used several different method to create, search and find the music we thought would work perfectly with our movies genre, plot and overall feel of the opening sequence. We played around with garage band on Mac, although the music software on this is effective and easy to use it wasn’t creating the desired effect. It just wasn’t what I was particularly looking for. We did want to try and use both of our finds but the un-copyrighted music written by … was more affective and worked with our opening sequence better the that we made on garage band. The music we found has the desired effect if changes with each in important moments I has a artificial sound which helps the scenes oddity, the pace of the music helps to build tension in the minds of the audience because they don’t know what is going to happen next. The music has a sense of suspense the light changes in tempo show how the femme fatal is thinking it could even sound like breathing as we watch her around the room an out the door. Near the end of our opening sequence the music pace changes and begins to sound more like a heartbeat, this is important because it show how the character is feeling this helps because we have very little speech, so the music is accentual to the persona of the character and also contributes immensely to the atmosphere of the location to create our desired effect. I prefer the music we have in our final opening sequence, but if I would have been possible I would have liked to mix both the Mac music and the un-copy written music by Stephan Scott. We used the first MAC music on the DVD Menu on the disc though so are efforts were not wasted.

After we decided to change the ending of our opening sequence, I knew the music had to also be changed or I would work. After changing our opening production title I used garage band to create the right effect. the beats in the music nearly hit every letter that is placed, I feel that this is why the opening looks a lot better because the music really goes well. So after this 1 much time I created music for the second half of our piece using garage band I done this so that the contrasts in the two scenes in the opening would be different and contrast well with the character. The music for this I made very calm and inviting by using the Mac I could use all different types of instruments to get the effect I wanted. the instruments used were the some music instruments that were pre composed, mixed it to other instrument such as a keyboard and piano. This created the correct effect i was looking for.

Costume Research

These are some pre made outfit design from the website polyvore, for a femme fatal I liked this because of the two colours, it famine and dark at the same time I loved how they have add some extra accessories to create a real mood board of ideas for a interesting effect. The pink is really good, but it doesn’t go with the start of the film we want to create but the idea of back and the skirt with tight is something I have used in my chosen design. The pink looks to put together and at the beginning of our movie are female character is meant to look a mess and all over the place this is why some of these ideas are to paresis for the femme fatal in our movie opening sequence.

When doing research I found some generic ideas within the costume designs, pink, red and black are key colour, items that are basic straight skirts and dresses are used a lot. This also follows the woman in noir films, which could link the two concepts of a femme fatale and film noir, are linked continually and this concept may have come from that original genre. This I have noticed from several old noir films such as I wake up screaming and the woman in the window.

Acting

As I was mainly the only character in our film opening sequence the decision about the acting was up to me. Before deciding on my character’s persona I looked at many different media resource to get an idea of the sort of character I wanted to portray. I studied the femme fatal characters in films such as fatal attraction and obsession, to inspire my acting throughout the opening sequence. Generally the conventions that consist of this thriller sub genre are what appears to be a sane every day woman but underneath she is desperate for attention and affection from men sometimes just one man in particular. This desperation will define the type of femme fatal she is driven to either the traditional a bunny boiler, or scorned woman with more of a sociological problem rather then violent this taken from my research has been important for the motivation for the character I wanted to portray.
I believe that the audience should know immediately that there’s something not quite right with her. Not quite knowing what but something. Many films that come under this convention show her as sweet and gentle at first look so that the audience get more of a shock when they see her again and the cracks start to show. We played with this common convention showing our character first to break down and the go back to the start to show the audience the path that she took to get to that point in her life. We used the watch on a chain to show this time going backwards to the start.
The props and music were also created to help with this effect. I looked at several films with character using the femme of a femme fatal. The helped me to get into the mindset of the character, I also looked at other thrillers to get a better idea of the sort of characters that are in this particular genres. We wanted the character to look almost normal, but something there is obviously not right, this wasn’t just created through the acting but also the costume and makeup. Through the acting I wanted it to be mainly about the eyes. I feel that acting; can be done just by using eyes this I think was very effective.
Another main part of the acting was the way the character uses gesture such as the twirling of the knife, this conveys a thought to an audience, the character has the knife for a reason, and this question plays through the audience’s minds, keeping them interested. These two main attributes in the acting are made more dramatic due to there being little speech, during the start, this makes up for that and the woman’s silence adds to the effect.
During my time playing this character my experience doing GCSE drama did come in handy. Thing like knowing how staging could be set out to create the best affect was very important. I used my facial expression to show contempt and anger looking into the mirror and at the picture, which also gesturing with the knife showed I mean business and shows the audience what the character is feeling.
In the second half of the movie the most crucial moment when you see the whisper, catches the audience attention and will keep them enthralled as there are still unanswered questions. The second half was a lot about body language, being under the tree and the looks she gives him while sitting on the bench. Create a shock for the audience after seeing what she becomes.

Rough Cut Feedback

Survey 1

Survey 2

After getting audience feedback we decided there would be things we would need to change this includes the whole second half of the opening sequence. This is due to it being a bit confusing for the audience but also due to it pretty much repeating the same footage twice. This looks like we didn’t have enough effort to complete the opening sequence properly so this is a main thing we will need to redo. I did think the first half of the rough cut looked really good though so this part is going to stay the same and not change the rough cut has given us a good opportunity to look back on the things we have done well and not so well and improve on them which I now think anyone doing this should create a rough cut and then go back and make changes as this will really make the piece meet its full potential.

Also what must be change when editing the Rough cut into our final cut is the dreadful unprofessional looking title they have little research done to the and so this is a big problem that needs a lot more consideration to. I think some decent research will make them ten times better and look as though there from a real opening sequence rather then something that was made by students.

Another thing that the rough cut has shown me for next year is that you must have lots and lots of footage to choose from, this is because then you can pick the best bits. Never just film what you have planned to film you should also have extra ideas that you get on the day this will often be where you will get some of the best footage from. Making the rough cut and being able to analysing it I feel is what will make the final result better the second time. So I have spent a lot of time looking at it and making notes on what can be made better.

Rough Cut Feedback Questionaire

I asked people in our media class for feedback on our ruff cut film. I showed then the ruff cut of the opening sequence and then asked them to fill out a questionnaire feedback sheet.

This is a copy of the feedback sheet-

1. What is the genre of the opening sequence?

• …………………………………………

2. Was the genre of the opening sequence clear?

Yes No

3. List three improvements that could be made to the opening sequence?

• ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
• ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
• ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

4. What in the opening sequence is effective?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

5. Was there a wide enough range of shot types used in the opening sequence?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

6. Did the opening sequence make you want to watch the rest of the film?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

7. What grade would you give the opening sequence?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Results Of Survey

These are the results from the feedback survey that I have collected I have used graphs to analysis the questions when necessary.

As question one in my feedback survey of genre I asked thriteen people what genre they thought our opening sequence was, this question was an open answer question. But the key answers people gave were mystery, thriller, horror and crime. I found that five out of the thirteen people that I asked said that they thought that it was a thriller film. Three out of thirteen people that I asked said that they thought it was part of the mystery genre. Two out of the thirteen people I asked said that they thought it was a horror genre film. One out of the thirteen people I asked said that they through that it is a crime genre film. And two out of the thirteen people I asked wrote other genres. The most popular option given for this question is thriller as the genre of our film. The results of this question have shown me that our opening sequence can be identified as a thriller film, but it may be easier to classify as a thriller genre film if we are to make a few changes to the opening sequence.

As question two in my feedback survey of genre I asked thirteen people if they thought that the genre of our opening sequence is easy to identify as a thriller genre film, this was a open ended question, but every one answered either yes or no. I found that eleven out of the thirteen people I asked said that they found the opening sequence easy to identify as a thriller genre film. The other two people out of the thirteen I asked said that they did not find the opening sequences easy to identify as a thriller sub- genre film. the results from this question have shown me that the opening sequence is easy to identify as a thriller genre film because the majority of people I asked said that they found it easy to identify as a thriller genre film, although a small number of people I asked said that they could not identify it so it may be beneficial to make a few changes to help make sure it completely clear to an audience the genre of the opening sequence.

As question three In my feedback survey of genre I asked thirteen people I asked people to list three improvements that they think we could do to improve our opening sequence their were a variety of answers given but their were five key responses that a lot of people that I asked wrote. The five most given responses to this question are fade to black at the end, no film name, no production company name, Bit long and a bit repetitive. The responses that I got from this question in the feedback survey will help me when making improvements because I now know that key things that I could do to improve our opening sequence to make it more interesting and understandable to viewers the answers that was given the most is the fact that it is quite repetitive I think when making improvements I think the fact that the flash back sequence seems repetitive is an issue that we need to address.

As question four in my feedback survey of genre I asked thirteen people what three key things they thought were good about our opening sequence, this was an open ended response question although there were six answers that were given the most often. These responses are the use of the point of view shot, flashing transitions (in flash back sequence), use of black and white, close up of eye, flash back sequence and use of music. The results from this question have shown me key parts and elements of our opening sequence that an audience liked although there are a lot of positive responses to the uses of a flash back sequence in the previous question it was also mentioned to be a bit repetitive so I think the results of this question has shown that when we make improvements this is a key area we need to look closely at to improve.

As question five in my feedback survey of genre I asked thirteen people if their was a wide enough use of shots used in our opening sequence, this was an open ended question but every one I asked responded either yes or no. I found that twelve out of the thirteen people I asked said that their was a wide enough use of shots used in our opening sequence. Only one person out of the thirteen people I asked said that did not think that their was a wide enough range of camera shots used in the opening sequence. I have found from this question that an audience thinks that we have used a wide enough range of shots to make the opening sequence interesting to watch because twelve of the thirteen people I asked said that they thought we had used a wide enough range of shot types.

As question six in my feedback survey of genre I asked thirteen people if the opening sequence would make them want to watch the rest of the film, this was an open ended question but everyone answer yes or no.I found that eleven out of the thirteen people I asked said that they would want to carry on watching the film after seeing the opening sequence. The other two people I asked said that they would not want to watch the rest of the film after watching the opening sequence. The results from this question have shown me that our opening sequence is fit for purpose as an opening sequence, because the main point of a films opening sequence is to hook the viewer and with eleven people out of thirteen people saying they would carry on watching the film after the opening sequence it shows me our opening sequence is effective as an opening sequence because it makes people want to carry on watching the film.

As question seven in my feedback survey of genre I asked thirteen people what grade they would give the ruff cut of our production, this was an open ended question but every answer one of four answers which are C, B,B+ and A. I found that four out of the thirteen people I asked said that they would give our film a grade C. I found that four out of the thirteen people I asked said that they would give our opening sequence a B grade. I found four out of the thirteen people I asked said that they would grade our opening sequence as a B+. And one person I asked said that they would give our opening sequence an A grade. The results from this question have shown me that our production may receive between a C and a B because those are the majority of answers that people gave ranged in between.

Rough Cut Video

This is the first cut off our opening sequence, before making any more changes I feel we need to get some audience feedback on what we have made so for.

Thriller and Femme Fatal Ideas

We decided to create a thriller because of some of it interesting conventions Thrillers are characterized depending on the thriller it can be a fast pacing, frequent action, or that of a resourceful heroes who must thwart the plans of more powerful and better equipped villains. You can then get the psychotically thriller which is a bit strange and the audience doesn't work it all out to the end. The villain is generally punished, and the strong silent man generally wins the weak woman. Literary devices such as suspense, red herrings and cliff-hangers are used extensively. A thriller is villain driven plot, whereby he presents obstacles the hero must overcome. The genre is a fascinatingly flexible you can see from looking at its subgenres

All though we liked several of the themes, our main ideas come from the theme of a physiological thriller with the main character is infatuated with a man she hardly knows. That’s where the idea comes from for the femme fatal character. The femme fatal character mainly appears in thriller movies rather than anything else. This is because this is a great fear for many men being either an object of pure obsession and controlled or in danger from a woman scorned. This make films like these perfect for a male and female audience, men will be interested to see what can happen and a woman would secretly enjoy watching a woman being in control and dangerous due to what a man has done to her, or who she feels about that man and the consequence to the action she makes. Also if it’s more physiological, this will keep a woman interested other then a gory action thriller with over the top violence.

So overall this research has helped to define our ideas for our movie opening sequence. It has given us a change to look at ideas from other films. A get a better look at the themes we are going to create and use for our opening sequences. This research has given me lots of ideas for our movie such as plot ideas and a script for just the opening sequence, making it short and simple. This will create an eerie effect and create tension which is one of the key elements for a thriller such as ours, we decided on a thriller because it gives use so much option and is such a vast genre we can do almost anything. But by narrowing it down by adding a femme fatal character we may have got less choice but it still gives use plenty of options. I love the idea of using a femme fatal character because it challenges the convention of a thriller/ stalker film making the stalker like character a woman, who is often portrayed to be weak
